A French ski trip to Japan…

Some time ago French free skier Sarah Martinias contacted me to ask a few questions about skiing in Japan. I have been on 4 ski trips to the land of the rising sun and every time I go back I swear its not my last. Even though we hadn’t met, Sarah and I cooked up a plan to go shoot a story for French media in the Nagano region, as this is my favourite place to ski in Japan. With any trip comes months of planning, organising, emails going back and forth. I was to meet Sarah along with free skiers Fabrice Dompnier, Frank Bigourdan and snowboarder Marion Gouwy at Tokyo Airport, all ready to start a two week ski adventure deep in the Japanese Alps. I arrived in Tokyo the night before my new French friends so took it upon myself to visit Tsukiji Fish market. This is the worlds biggest fish market and it happens in Tokyo every morning, you have to get there early and I was there to watch the organised chaos unfold from 5am. Unfortunately the tuna auction was closed the morning I went but there was still plenty to look at. I find it pretty sad … Read Full Post

Behind the scenes with Canon’s new 7D Mark II

I recently had the pleasure of producing as well as shooting behind the scenes stills on a film shoot for Canon Australia by Untitled Films. The film is all about the release of Canon’s new 7D Mark II and its amazing new features many of which are great for shooting sports. They asked legendary motorsports photographer and Canon Master Mark Horsburgh to test this awesome new camera. It was all filmed by Canon Master Abraham Joffe, who is an outstanding DSLR cinematographer. It was an honour to work with him and his team for their shoot in Queenstown. They flew in from Australia so needed me to produce the shoot, in both location scouting and talent. The video was released today and its already going pretty viral! Check it out:

It was a three day shoot, with the first day at Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell.

Back country ski course

I was very privileged to be invited by my friends at Adventure Consultants to shoot and participate in their back country ski course, which specializes in ski mountaineering and glacier travel. I took Australian free-skier Nat Segal with me to join in the learning as well as shooting photos of her experience on the course. I am always a fan of improving my knowledge and skills on the mountain, especially when it comes to snow safety and glacier travel. You can never know enough! With Nat’s chosen ski career of climbing and skiing high peaks it was a great way for her to learn too, as well as us both hang out in one of the most beautiful and remarkable places in New Zealand.
Its a bit of a magical mystery tour with Adventure Consultants as they let you know where you are headed the morning the course starts, there are so many amazing options in NZ for incredible big mountain and glacier skiing. Much to my delight they decided to take us to the West Coast and Franz Joseph Glacier. This is such a remarkable place as you fly from the ocean to the glaciers in moments, soaring above native rain forest … Read Full Post

Air New Zealand – behind the scenes photo-shoot at Treble Cone, Wanaka

Last week I was asked to shoot some behind the scenes photos for Air New Zealand on a film project they were shooting. Over the winter months in New Zealand they have been releasing short films about how good the skiing is here, with the campaign being called ‘Meanwhile in New Zealand…’ with the aim of getting Austrailians over the ditch to ski and snowboard our fantastic mountains. This film was shot at Treble Cone in Wanaka and was released this week.  It is such a clever take on two of New Zealand’s favourite sports, skiing and rugby! The film was shot by the team at Diaries Down Under and drone footage by Heli Optics at Colab Creative.

Meanwhile in New Zealand…
It was so fun to shoot behind the scenes photos on this shoot. As with most commercial shoots we were up at sparrows fart to start the long days shooting.

North Face shoot on Franz Joseph Glacier

Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited to shoot for North Face on a trip to Franz Joseph Glacier, on the West Coast of New Zealand. Franz Joseph is one of NZ’s largest Glaciers and at 12km long it almost comes down to the Tasman Sea. It was a trip guided by Adventure Consultants, with North Face team skiers Janina Kuzma, Fraser McDougall and Tom Dunbar. Being filming as part of The North Face Quest shows was Neil Kerr of NZ Skier magazine and mountain guide filmer Hugh Bernard. Armed with quite the team of professionals it was set to be quite the trip. We had a very short weather window and as soon as a storm cleared we were in the chopper on our way to Centennial Hut high on Franz Joseph.

Sheep shearing and heli skiing

I thought I would share a few snaps with you from my past few weeks adventures. I  have been very busy over the past month and a half with heaps of winter photo jobs on. With two weeks shooting the NZ Winter Games for Getty Images, followed by a photo shoot cat skiing with  Queenstown Snowcats, then straight into shooting the park side of The North Face Freeski Open. Then a wicked heli photo shoot for The North Face, with Harris Mountain Heli and Aspiring Guides. And squeezed in between a catalog park shoot for Atomic! So a bit of time in helicopters and a lot of time in the mountains has made for a good productive winter so far. I thought I would share some slightly abstract areal photography with you, snapped from the chopper as we flew. I love flying over the Kiwi farms, checking out the landscape and stock roaming amongst it!

Snow Park shoot with Jossi Wells

Sorry for silence lately. I have been busy working with Jossi Wells over the past two weeks, shooting for the new Atomic 2012/13 catalog. Amongst this, local filmmaker Tim Pierce has been shooting the Wells family for his new documentary, Winter of Wells. It will be out shortly so watch this space. To see the trailer, check out Tim’s blog
So, Tim organised a chopper to shoot Jossi and his brothers, Beau-James and Jackson for the day at snow park, with a gimbal camera rig (a swanky camera mounted to the bottom of the heli, all controlled inside by the man that is Tim Pierce, and flown by incredibly talented pilot Alfie Speight, who has flown many a chopper for film shoots, including work on Lord of the Rings) It started with an early morning pipe session, with a perfectly cut empty pipe, glorious light and a sled for fast laps.

Air New Zealand – Advertising Campaign

A quick update. I have just been in Greece for a cheeky wee holiday with my family and a very welcome break from my computer (most of the time!) and am now back in London before heading to Paris next week and then on to Sweden to compete in Scandinavian Photo Challenge in Are, hosted by a favorite photographer of mine, Mattias Fredrickson.

Martin Place, Sydney
I wanted to share with you a few photos from a recent ad campaign that many of my winter images from New Zealand were used in. Air New Zealand ran an ‘exhibition’ in Martin Place Station in the center of Sydney’s CBD. My photos were amongst the work of Tony Harrington and Dan Himbrechts. To check out all the images that ran, go to http://www.airnewzealand.com.au/3hrsaway

Each shot has a ‘plaque’ next to it with the information about the shot. If you have a smart phone you can scan in the QRR code and listen to an audio guide about each shot. Clever eh!?
